ESSENTIAL OILS 101

READY TO GET STARTED IN THE AMAZING WORLD OF ESSENTIAL OILS?

What are Essential Oils?

When you smell a flower, you are actually smelling the evaporation of the essential oil off of the plant. Those aromatic compounds are comprised of hundreds of chemical constituents that uniquely address each system in our body to help us stay healthy and function normally. While essential oils are beautifully fragrant, they are also extremely powerful. One drop of peppermint essential oil is an equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea! They also have a 50-70 time higher concentration rate than the herb itself. Because of their small molecular size and lipid solubility, they are able to penetrate the outer membrane of the cell wall and stop the replication of seasonal and environmental threats. Essential oils are distilled from various parts of the plant, including the root, bark, seeds, leaves, stems, and flower. There are various distillation methods used to separate the oil from the plant material. Some of those include steam distillation, expression, maceration, and solvent extraction methods. The best part? They average out to pennies per drop and can be administered in the comfort of your own home. If you’re a mother of twins like myself, you’ll appreciate the reduced trips to the doctor, exposure to other illnesses, and expensive co-pays.

Grades of Essential Oils

One of the most important concepts to understand is not all essential oils are created equal. With the rise in essential oils, there are a lot of products on the market that claim to have, or contain, essential oils. These products can range in price and quality, and are typically found in various skin and hair care lines, cosmetics, household cleaning supplies, and more. However, many of the products claiming to use essential oils are often diluting or replacing the essential oil extract with fragrant, synthetic chemical substitutes. Since there are no regulatory standards for these aromatic compounds, these substitutes and other lower quality essential oils on the market, can do more arm to your family than good.

Aromatic Uses

There is a close connection between aroma and emotions.

Have you ever smelled a particular odor or fragrance and it triggered a memory or specific feeling? This is because the smell receptors on the upper surface of the nasal cavity make a direct link with the limbic system. In other words, the area that governs the body’s emotional responses.

Not only is our sense of smell directly linked to our physical and mental health, it’s also the primary modality by which we experience the world around us. While some aromas can trigger a specific memory and impact mood, others can purify the air of unwanted odors and airborne pathogens.

There are many acceptable ways to use essential oils for their aromatic purposes. One method would be diffusing the essential oil into the air using cold air or hydrodiffusion.

However, if you do not have a diffuser, simply dropping the oil into the palm of the hand, rubbing them together, then cupping around the nose and breathing deeply is another great alternative to impacting your mood.

Topical Uses

This form of application is unique because it allows for localized effects in the area of the application in addition to providing whole body support. Due to their small molecular nature, essential oils are easily absorbed through the skin, into your bloodstream, within the first 30 seconds of application. Eventually servicing every cell in your body within a 20 minute time frame. Topical application is not limited to concerns such as the occasional muscle and joint soreness, supporting and maintaining a healthy digestive system, promoting healthy respiratory function, head and neck tension, occasional ear discomfort, incorporating into your daily skin care regimen, and more. In addition, adding essential oils to a massage can help beautifully restore and calm the body and mind.

Some essential oils fall into the “neat” category, meaning, they can be applied without dilution because of their exceptionally mild chemistry. While others are placed into the “caustic,” or “hot,” category. These oils may cause a heightened reactivity which will result in an unwanted response in the body or on the skin. For safety purposes, all of the oils in this category should be diluted with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, jojoba oil, grapeseed oil, and more.

To ensure safe usage, conducting a sensitivity test on an inconspicuous area is always recommended. As well as diluting for sensitive skin, small children, and babies.

Internal Uses

Because essential oils are naturally powerful, it is important to remember that using small amounts of oil throughout the day is much more effective than a single, large amount taken at once.

This is what makes internal use the easiest method to control how much your body is receiving at once. To use, just add a drop to your water, under your tongue, or to an empty size 00 vegetable capsule.

An important fact to remember is that oils should always be placed into your favorite glass or stainless steel cup. Citrus oils, in particular, have a chemical composition that is known to interfere with the chemistry of plastics and will dissolve Styrofoam.

Ingesting essential oils can help nourish your whole body, including the digestive system, mouth, throat, liver, and urogenital tract. However, not all brands of essential oils are created equal. Please make sure the essential oils you ingest are designated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and have the appropriate dietary supplement facts labeled on the bottle. This includes the brand I trust and recommend, doTERRA essential oils. Do NOT ingest any oils that you can buy off of the shelves at various businesses around your area.

“I have literally fallen in love with doTERRA's products. From pains and aches to relaxation. From motivation to stress release for my children. My go-to in the morning is rubbing Balance on my feet because it lifts me up and grounds me. One or two drops in my diffuser also creates a sense of calmness for my daughter before heading to the bus. I especially like the Oil Camps because I get to learn more and meet others that value a healthier way of life. Lastly, I must mention On Guard and Frankincense. They’re must haves in my collection."

-Victoria Porter

“I originally ordered the lavender, lemon and peppermint trio because I wanted to support my friend. Then I attended one of Amiee’s classes and realized there was a whole world of oils. I use oils for everything now. I use Balance and Lavender to help with my anxious feelings, Deep Blue for muscle aches, and Lemon to help with my dad’s kidneys. One night my dad was having a terrible foot cramp, I applied Cypress on his feet and within minutes the cramps stopped. I’m amazed at how much the oils have changed our lives!”
